A First at Alanya State Hospital: 72-Year-Old Patient Survives

At Alanya Education and Research Hospital, an open-heart surgery was performed for the first time using a minimally invasive (small incision) technique.

In recent years, with advancements in technology, Alanya Education and Research Hospital, which is at the forefront of healthcare and has made significant achievements in interventional cardiovascular surgery, has accomplished another milestone. Hüseyin Aydoğan, a 72-year-old patient who came to the hospital's Emergency Department with chest pain complaints, was diagnosed with a problem with his heart valve after examination and tests. With the patient's consent, the heart surgery was successfully performed for the first time at the hospital using the minimal incision technique. The surgery, conducted by cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Ümit Duman, Associate Professor Dr. Dolunay Odabaşı, and their team, marks a significant success in the field of healthcare.

Dr. Duman, explaining about the surgery, said: “Minimally invasive thoracotomy, also known in the community as the 'closed method' or 'mini-bypass,' is performed by reaching the heart through small incisions without cutting the breastbone. This technique provides a high level of comfort for our patients. After surgery, patients experience smaller cosmetic scars, less pain, and can return to their social lives in a shorter time. Since the breastbone is not opened like in traditional open-heart surgeries, patients can start walking normally a week after the surgery, which makes their return to life very quick. This operation can be performed in cases of heart valve repair and replacement and for a few coronary cases that we evaluate.”

Associate Professor Dr. Odabaşı highlighted that such surgeries are performed only in a few medical centers in the country and said: “As the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic of Alanya Education and Research Hospital, we hope to continue performing such operations successfully. It is a matter of pride that this surgery was performed for the first time at our hospital. I thank our Ministry of Health, our Provincial Health Director, our Chief Physician, and my team members for their support and contributions.”

Patient Aydoğan, who regained his health, stated that he had no pain after the surgery and, after being discharged, swam in the sea up to his waist, walked on the beach, and enjoyed his second chance at life. Hüseyin Aydoğan expressed his gratitude to the doctors who performed his surgery and the hospital administration, stating that having such a surgery done in Alanya is a great opportunity for them.
