KGK at the COP29 Summit in Baku: Minister Kurum outlined Turkey's roadmap

At the COP29 Climate Summit in Baku, Turkey's Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, presented Turkey’s long-term strategy in combating climate change.
The meeting, which had a high level of participation, was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Global Journalists Council (KGK), İsmail Bayazıt. The strategic plan and roadmap prepared under Turkey’s "2053 Net Zero Emission Target" were shared with the participants.
In his speech, Murat Kurum emphasized the importance of access to financial resources in the fight against climate change. "Access to climate finance is critical for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change. We see COP29 as a turning point in this area," he stated. The minister highlighted that Turkey would continue its climate efforts with 89 strategies across 18 sectors, with a particular focus on ambitious reduction targets in the energy and industry sectors. Kurum also outlined Turkey’s goals to increase the share of renewable energy and reduce emissions: "We aim to raise the share of renewables to 50% and nuclear energy to 29%, making 80% of our national energy carbon-neutral." He also discussed projects on waste management, sustainable agriculture, and expanding forest areas.
COP31 CANDIDACY
Minister Kurum touched upon Turkey's candidacy for hosting COP31, announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan: "During our presidency, we aim to serve as a bridge between developed and developing countries, supporting technology and financial flows within the framework of climate justice," he said.
In closing, he called for global cooperation and solidarity in combating climate change, expressing hope that the decisions taken at the summit would bring positive outcomes for the planet: "I hope that the decisions we make against the climate crisis will yield beneficial results for our shared home — Earth."
KGK AT COP29 SUMMIT
The Global Journalists Council was represented at the meeting by Deputy Chairman İsmail Bayazıt, who highlighted Turkey’s determination in climate efforts and its comprehensive roadmap. KGK was recorded as the only international press organization to directly observe this significant summit.
