Picking This Flower in Alanya Could Cost You 387,000 TL

Endangered Sand Lilies Begin to Bloom on Alanya’s Beaches – Picking Them Could Cost You 387,141 TL
Sand lilies, which grow naturally on the sandy shores of Alanya and are classified as endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), have started to bloom. Picking or damaging these protected plants is subject to a hefty fine of 387,141 Turkish lira. Since the export of their bulbs is strictly prohibited, local authorities, relevant institutions, and environmental volunteers have taken action to protect them. The plants are now enclosed in metal cages with warning signs displayed.
Environmental volunteer Güldane Şahin, who works to protect the plants, said: “Our sand lilies usually bloom in June, July, August, and September. They are used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. They have a beautiful appearance, blooming white flowers out of scorching sands, and their scent is unforgettable. Uprooting or removing them comes with a fine of 387,141 lira.”
“I INVITE EVERYONE TO PROTECT THEM”
Şahin expressed concern about the lack of sufficient protection: “I invite everyone to help protect sand lilies. They’ve been under protection in our country since 2016. It’s an endangered species that was placed under conservation worldwide much earlier. Although many fines have been issued to vehicles entering the beach where the plant grows, we haven’t been able to identify those who pick or uproot them. Please, let’s protect sand lilies together.”
