Sea Pollution in Alanya Reaches Dangerous Levels

Sea Pollution in Alanya Reaches Alarming Levels: Experts Call for Urgent Action
Rising pollution along the coasts of Antalya and Alanya is threatening both marine life and public health. Experts warn that with increasing temperatures, microbial risks in the sea are also rising, cautioning that “next year may be too late.”
Severe Environmental Pollution
Assoc. Prof. Güray Doğan from Akdeniz University stated that serious pollution has been observed in the area stretching from Gazipaşa to Alanya. He highlighted that not only tourism activities, but also agricultural waste and litter dumped into the sea are worsening the problem. “Waste from beaches and boats, along with excessive plastic use, is threatening the marine ecosystem,” he said.
“We Must Think of Antalya as a Five-Armed Balance”
Doğan emphasized that plastics and domestic waste harm marine life, reduce biodiversity, and damage tourism. He stressed: “Antalya must be preserved by maintaining balance between agriculture, tourism, history, nature, and industry.”
Microbial Risks on the Rise
Experts warn that microbial growth in seawater, intensified by rising temperatures, may lead to health issues such as vomiting, nausea, and fever—especially in coves where the effects are more visible.
Public Reaction
While some beachgoers clean up the litter to set an example, others complain about glass bottles and plastics left behind. “We clean every day, but it never ends. This is the most beautiful city in the world, but everyone must protect it,” one local said.
Proposed Solutions
Strengthening waste management systems,
Joint inspection programs between tourism and agriculture sectors,
Regular beach clean-ups and awareness campaigns,
Expanding environmental education for citizens.
