Small Hotels in Alanya Struggle Under New Fire Safety Regulations

According to Gazete Alanya, small and older hotels in Alanya are facing a serious crisis due to newly introduced fire safety regulations following the Kartalkaya disaster.

The regulation mandates a second fire escape, fire-resistant doors, and in some cases, refuge areas in buildings.

Hoteliers warn that these demands could structurally compromise their buildings and impose unsustainable financial burdens.

Eray Erdem, President of the Alanya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ALTSO), argues: “Applying Kartalkaya-style rules to all properties overlooks the economic reality of small, legacy establishments; tailored measures are needed.”

Operators say, “We didn’t make money in tourism — we’re just trying to survive. These requirements might force many of us to shut down.”

Analysis & Outlook:

The regulation poses a significant threat to the financial sustainability of small hotels, which typically operate on thin margins.

Rising costs may lead to closures, fewer independent hotels, and declining diversity in Alanya’s accommodation offerings.

Some hotels may pool resources or partner with professional fire-safety firms to share costs.

Local authorities might need to offer financial support, phased implementation, or grants to help small hotel operators comply.

Failure to act could reshape the local hospitality landscape and long-term viability of family-run properties.
