Ukrainian Tourist Runs Over Robbers in Alanya: 25-Year Sentence

On November 10, 2023, in Alanya, Ukrainian tourist Dymitro Chaban was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by two motorcyclists who took €35,000 from him. Chaban pursued the suspects in his car and collided with their motorcycle in Mahmutlar neighborhood.
The suspects, Murat O. and Elnur B., died at the scene. A pistol and an empty shell were also recovered.
At the Alanya 1st High Criminal Court, Chaban received a 25-year prison sentence with a provocation (haksız tahrik) reduction. The verdict sparked debate, with some defending his self-defense actions and others criticizing the use of lethal force.
Analysis:
The case is an important precedent for tourist safety and crime in resort areas.
The provocation reduction acknowledges the defendant’s state of mind.
The long sentence could deter similar crimes but may also generate legal and ethical discussions.
