Is a New Epidemic Coming? Cases Are Rising Rapidly

According to Chinese state media, there is a rise in cases of a viral infection called human metapneumovirus (HMPV) among children in the country. The increase in cases has begun to alarm other countries about a potential global epidemic.
HMPV cases are rising in China. Local media reports indicate that this viral infection, known as human metapneumovirus (HMPV), is particularly common among children. It is currently one of the four most widespread viral infections in Chinese hospitals.
Andrew Easton, a virology professor at the University of Warwick in the UK who specializes in pneumoviruses, stated, "Since its discovery in the early 21st century, HMPV has been recognized as a significant concern for at-risk populations worldwide."
WHAT IS HMPV?
HMPV belongs to the same family of viruses as RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), a seasonal virus that causes colds and lung infections.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Common symptoms of the infection include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. However, the infection can progress to bronchitis (inflammation of the airways leading to the lungs) or pneumonia (fluid-filled air sacs in the lungs).
