Gazipaşa was devastated by a tornado: Greenhouses suffered major damage

A tornado that struck Gazipaşa yesterday evening caused severe damage in the neighborhoods of Gazi and Beyobası. Glass and plastic greenhouses were destroyed, and the roofs of some houses were torn off. Although no casualties were reported, the local population experienced great fear.

Around 7:30 PM in Gazipaşa, strong winds and heavy rain quickly turned into a tornado. Passing through the neighborhoods of Gazi and Beyobası, the tornado shattered glass greenhouses and tore off the coverings of plastic ones. Some house roofs were blown away, and numerous trees were uprooted. Locals described the event as "a disaster that came in minutes."

TEAMS DISPATCHED TO THE AREA

Following the tornado, gendarmerie, police, health teams, municipal workers, and AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) were sent to the area. Initial reports indicate no loss of life or injuries. However, citizens whose homes and greenhouses were damaged expressed great sorrow. Cleaning and repair work has begun for the fallen trees and destroyed greenhouses.

“IT SOUNDED LIKE AN AIRPLANE”

One of the residents, Nihal Torun, shared her experience: “It all happened suddenly. The storm came, and the house shook. We heard a noise like an airplane. It didn’t even last five minutes, but our greenhouse was destroyed.”

The moment the tornado passed was recorded by a resident on a mobile phone. The footage clearly shows greenhouses being torn apart, roofs flying off houses, and people panicking. Officials stated that damage assessment continues and efforts will be made to compensate those affected.
