The European Union is lifting sanctions on Syria.

The European Union countries have given their approval in principle for the lifting of all economic sanctions on Syria. The decision aims to support the reconstruction of the country after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. With the end of the civil war in Syria, the normalization process in the international arena is accelerating. In this context, the European Union has taken a significant step.

PRELIMINARY AGREEMENT REACHED

According to reports from Agence France-Presse (AFP), the EU has reached a preliminary agreement to lift all sanctions imposed on the Syrian government.

SANCTIONS ON SYRIA TO BE LIFTED

EU foreign ministers unanimously decided to lift the economic sanctions imposed on Syria since 2011 during the latest meeting in Brussels. These sanctions were aimed at weakening the Assad regime, including freezing the assets of regime officials, imposing travel bans, restricting oil exports, and applying various sectoral embargoes.

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT TO BE MADE

Diplomats stated that the ambassadors of the 27 EU member states will officially announce the decision at the Foreign Ministers' Meeting to be held today in Brussels.

BACKGROUND OF THE DECISION

The civil war that began in Syria in 2011 displaced millions of people, caused the collapse of infrastructure, and brought the economy to a near halt. While the EU sanctions aimed to weaken the regime economically, they were also criticized for worsening the living conditions of the civilian population. Following the fall of Assad, a new political process was initiated in Syria, and the international community has begun efforts for the country's reconstruction.

DONALD TRUMP ALSO LIFTED SANCTIONS

U.S. President Donald Trump also announced that he had lifted all U.S. sanctions on Syria at an investment forum held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, upon the request of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Trump emphasized that this decision was an important step for Syria's reconstruction and regional stability. He also noted that Erdoğan had argued that lifting the sanctions was necessary to support the new government in Syria and improve the economic welfare of the people.
