Preparations continue for a major transformation in transportation between Antalya and Mersin. Once completed, the journey time will be reduced to 4.5 hours.
Due to challenging geographical conditions, travel between Antalya and Mersin has long been lengthy and arduous. The "Mediterranean Coastal Road Project" is set to bring a fundamental change. Upon completion, the travel time between the two cities will decrease from 11 hours to 4.5 hours. This massive infrastructure investment aims to significantly contribute to the region's tourism, trade, and social life.,
A DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE
The Mediterranean Coastal Road Project, carried out under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, progresses through one of Turkey's most challenging terrains. Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan emphasizes that the project is not just a transportation investment but also a development initiative. Upon completion, approximately 150 minutes of the 500-kilometer route will be shortened, with 110 minutes of this reduction achieved through works within Mersin's borders.
TARGETING FULL OPERATION
The project includes the construction of a total of 28 tunnels and 16 viaducts. According to current plans, 16 tunnels and 8 viaducts have already been completed and opened to service. Even within just an 11-kilometer stretch of the Anamur-Gazipaşa route, there are 7 tunnels and 6 viaducts. A massive team of 3,750 personnel, ranging from engineers to laborers, is working tirelessly despite geographical challenges. The project is aimed to be completed and fully operational by the end of 2027.
MORE THAN JUST A TIME SAVER
The Mediterranean Coastal Road Project will not only shorten travel time but is also expected to make significant contributions to the regional economy, tourism, and social life. With this major transformation, the two prominent Mediterranean cities of Antalya and Mersin will become even closer. The new 4.5-hour journey is likely to reshape the travel routes for both domestic and international tourists in the region.
