Climate Crisis Threatens Alanya’s Tourism: Action Must Be Taken

Climate Crisis Threatens Alanya's Tourism: Immediate Action Needed
Speaking on the effects of climate change on tourism, ALTİD President Burhan Sili emphasized that Alanya’s tourism sector must act swiftly. The global climate crisis is directly impacting tourist destinations. Heatwaves and drought threats, especially felt in coastal areas, are putting tourism infrastructure at risk. Sili stressed that the effects of climate change can no longer be ignored and urgent measures must be taken in Alanya.
“The Climate Crisis Cannot Be Ignored”
Sili stated: “In our country, especially in coastal areas, temperatures are well above average. With heatwaves, temperatures can soar to dangerous levels. This situation poses serious health risks for both our citizens and domestic and international guests. The sharp rise in temperatures is a clear indicator of climate change, and unfortunately, it’s progressing faster than predicted.”
Beach Protection and Water Management Now a Necessity
Highlighting the urgent need for action, Sili warned: “Rising temperatures are causing coastal erosion, water scarcity, and extreme weather events. Beach protection and sustainable coastal management are no longer a luxury but a necessity.”
Water Resources Are Sounding the Alarm
The decline in water resources due to rising temperatures is putting serious pressure on both local residents and tourism businesses. Sili stressed the importance of raising awareness about sustainable water use.
Fire Risk Threatens the Season
Referring to recent wildfires and sudden weather events in various parts of Turkey, Sili said these pose a major risk to the tourism season: “It’s now clear that businesses operating in forested areas must be equipped with early warning and evacuation systems.”
Joint Action Is Needed to Reduce Carbon Footprint
Sili emphasized the importance of transportation and waste management models that reduce carbon emissions in combating the climate crisis: “Joint action with all public authorities and local governments is essential. The impact of the climate crisis on tourism doesn’t only affect the sector—it affects the future of the entire region.”
