Traditional Spread Breakfast to Be Phased Out in Alanya

Following the report prepared by the Presidential Council on Agriculture and Food Policies regarding traditional “spread breakfasts,” a new policy aimed at preventing food waste has come to the agenda. Hüseyin Değirmenci, President of the Alanya Chamber of Restaurateurs, who had made repeated calls on this issue in the past, expressed his satisfaction that these calls have finally been answered.
The report, which sparked nationwide debate, also received support from Alanya. Değirmenci, who has been warning about this issue for years, stated that the decision was appropriate and emphasized the importance of raising public awareness in the fight against waste.
“NO LONGER A NEED, BUT A COMMODITY”
Değirmenci highlighted that food waste is a global problem, noting that in recent years, food has been seen not as a necessity but as a commodity to be displayed on social media. He underlined that the scale of waste in all-inclusive accommodation systems is very high, and that “spread breakfast” is part of this waste. Instead, he suggested that a selective breakfast system would be more economical and efficient.
CALLS ARE BEARING FRUIT
Değirmenci said, “With every bite we take, we should empathize with people dying of hunger elsewhere in the world. Offering breakfast options according to need and nutritional value would be much more appropriate than a spread breakfast. We are pleased that steps are finally being taken on an issue we have been voicing for years.”
