New development in the cable car accident in Antalya: The court made its decision about 5 people

The case related to the accident at the Tünektepe Cable Car Facility in Konyaaltı, where one person died and seven were injured on April 12, 2024, continues at the Antalya 6th Heavy Penal Court. In connection with the incident, 12 defendants, including the mayor of Kepez, CHP member Mesut Kocagöz, are being prosecuted. Five of the defendants are in custody, while the others are facing trial without detention.

At the last hearing, the previously requested expert report was presented to the court and accepted as important evidence. The prosecutor requested that a report be prepared by a team from Istanbul Technical University for a more detailed investigation into the accident. Additionally, the prosecutor recommended that the detention of the arrested defendants be continued. The defendants' lawyers pointed to the statement in the report that "the accident was unforeseeable" and requested their clients' release under judicial control.

The court accepted the prosecutor's request for a report from ITU and also asked for additional analysis. The requests for the release of the detained defendants were rejected, and their detention was ordered to continue. The defendants are being prosecuted for "causing death and injury by negligence" and "endangering traffic safety," with a potential sentence of up to 27 years in prison. The trial has been postponed to January 17, 2025.
