Mert Yılmaz, a renowned economist well known in Alanya, made a striking comment on tourism, saying, “I think Turkey has become one of the most expensive places in the world.”

Yılmaz, who has attended many events in Alanya and evaluated the economy, made important statements.

Speaking on a television program, he also addressed the problems in tourism. Talking about the struggling tourism industry that affects Alanya as well, economist Mert Yılmaz said:

“I now believe that Turkey — and tourism is one of these areas — has become one of the most expensive places in the world. The same goes for food and beverage. You end up paying more at an ordinary restaurant in Turkey than you would for a meal in London or Paris. Even the cost of lunch is a simple example. This is a completely different kind of problem. It is clear that tourists are seriously dissatisfied.

Over the weekend, I was in Datça with Professor Sadi Uzunoğlu. Even during the holiday, things weren’t going as desired there either — people were saying, ‘It’s very weak.’ The expected performance may not be achieved, both in terms of domestic and foreign tourists,” he said.
