Reaction from Alanya politicians to the new speed enforcement cameras

After 8 years, speed cameras go live in Antalya: Alanya politicians react
ANTALYA – Launched in 2017 with the promise of completion in 7 months but delayed for 8 years, the Electronic Monitoring System (EDS) will finally begin operation today. The General Directorate of Security announced that speed enforcement will be carried out through the Average Speed Violation Detection System (PTS-EDS).
“It’s unlikely EDS will achieve its intended effect”
CHP Alanya District Chairman Bülent Kandemir: “The positive side is safer travel as drivers obey the rules. But the Alanya-Antalya route is already congested. Under such conditions, it’s hard for EDS to achieve the desired impact. Even reaching your destination within the designated time is nearly impossible.”
“Not improving comfort, but punishing citizens”
İYİ Party Alanya District Chairman Hilmi Er: “The AK Party government is not focusing on comfort but on punishment. EDS is being activated today. In developed countries, such systems improve safety, but here they increase fines. The Alanya-Antalya road, though called a dual carriageway, still takes 3.5 hours. EDS will only worsen the ordeal. The government should focus on reducing travel time and improving comfort. Bringing EDS after 7 years just to cover budget deficits shows their approach to citizens.”
“All eyes back on citizens’ wallets”
Saadet Party Alanya District Chairman Hüseyin Sarıca: “In 2011, an additional article to the Highway Traffic Law No. 2918 granted municipalities a 30% share of fines from EDS. In 2016, the law was amended, giving municipalities a 15% share after recouping expenses. Antalya also adopted this practice. The central government treated citizens like customers. Now that the expenses are recovered, eyes are once again on people’s wallets. Today, drivers even feel grateful if they can complete a trip without getting fined.”
