Young Suicides in Alanya Raise Concern

A Series of Youth Suicides in Alanya Raises Concern

In recent weeks, the suicides of 25-year-old E.Y. and 26-year-old M.U. have caused deep sorrow in Alanya and raised serious concerns in the community.

Across Turkey, suicide cases have been increasing, and Alanya has now become part of this worrying trend. Economic hardship, uncertainty about the future, and social problems appear to deeply affect young people.

Psychologist Büşra Yönet stated that suicide cases are rising and emphasized that this phenomenon can be “contagious.”

“Suicide Can Be Contagious”

Yönet explained that suicidal thoughts are much more common than people assume. The main driving force behind the act is a feeling of hopelessness. She warned that the way suicide is reported in the media can increase risks, whereas stories of resilience and coping strengthen hope and reduce cases.

“Young People Are More Affected”

According to Yönet, despair, financial struggles, uncertainty, and loneliness particularly impact young people. Social media comparisons, unemployment, debts, and family conflicts intensify this burden. She underlined that psychological support should be seen as a basic necessity, not a luxury, and stressed the importance of schools, families, and workplaces in providing support. “People who think about suicide actually want to live – they want the pain to end, not life itself,” she concluded.
