Credit card users can reclaim illegal fees — with interest

Some merchants continue to charge a “commission” or “service fee” on credit card payments — despite this being prohibited under the Turkey’s Bank Cards and Credit Cards Law No. 5464.

Experts note that consumers who paid such extra charges are entitled to reclaim the amount with interest.

Ibrahim Güllü, Deputy Chair of the Consumers’ Confederation, stated: “Merchants cannot refuse card payment or impose an extra fee.”

Consumers are advised to keep their receipts or slips, apply to the Consumer Arbitration Committee, submit complaints to BDDK or the Ministry of Trade and ask for the fee back plus interest.
