In the Cikcilli neighborhood of Alanya, a fire broke out around 4:30 PM yesterday in a 12-story building originally constructed as residential but under conversion into a hotel. Sparks from welding on the first floor ignited mattresses, fibers, and other flammable materials, causing the fire to spread rapidly with the help of other combustible items in the area. During the fire, four workers were trapped on different floors. They initially tried to extinguish the flames using fire extinguishers, but as the fire spread to other floors, multiple teams were dispatched to the scene.
FOUR WORKERS RESCUED
Four workers trapped in the building engulfed by flames and smoke were rescued by firefighters after about an hour. Three of the workers affected by smoke inhalation were taken to the hospital for treatment, while the fourth received first aid on-site. A firefighter injured from falling was also taken to the hospital. Law enforcement and gendarmerie teams ensured security in the area with 39 crews and 102 personnel. The fire was tackled by 14 fire trucks and 35 personnel from Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, 6 water tankers and 6 personnel from Alanya Municipality, 4 vehicles and 12 personnel from the Forestry Directorate, and 1 water tanker from ASAT. Police teams coordinated evacuation and order maintenance with 13 vehicles and 50 personnel, while AFAD deployed 2 crews and 4 personnel, and UMKE provided medical support with 1 crew and 2 personnel. The Red Crescent provided logistical support with 3 vehicles, and 4 ambulances from hospitals were on standby at the site. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the teams, the fire was extinguished around 7:00 PM.
ONE WORKER IN INTENSIVE CARE
One of the three workers receiving treatment at the hospital has been placed in intensive care. The firefighter injured by falling was discharged after treatment. Additionally, the cat rescued from the fire by firefighters, affected by the smoke, is under the care of the Alanya Municipality Veterinary Department. The department head, Hasan Sağlamer, stated: "The general condition of this beautiful cat is improving. It received oxygen support throughout the night. By morning, it started eating and drinking. As a precaution, we are waiting for 48 hours to pass."
PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION
The Alanya Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the fire, with a report on workplace safety deficiencies awaited. Efforts to assess the financial damage are ongoing. Footage revealed that the ground, first, and second floors were significantly damaged, with stored mattresses and furniture completely burned, while heavy smoke left soot on the upper floors.
