Minister Tekin announces: 12-year compulsory education to be shortened

Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin announced that a report on shortening the 12-year compulsory education has been completed. The report is to be submitted for approval to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the first Cabinet meeting. “If a decision is made, there are different alternatives,” Tekin said.

Tekin added that the duration of compulsory education may be reconsidered due to public expectations and easier access to information. He also recalled preparations by the Higher Education Council (YÖK) to reduce undergraduate programs to 3 years.

In his speech, the minister also touched upon teacher appointments: 15,000 teachers will be appointed on November 24, and starting from early 2026, the training process for 10,000 teachers will begin at the National Education Academy
